Grapefruit Cake

For this cake recipe I took a break from the Betty Crocker Cook Book. My family just got back from Florida. In Florida we went to a restaurant called the Hollywood Brown Derby in Disney World Hollywood Studios. We got a slice of grapefruit cake there and all of our family really liked it. On our way home, we picked up some Florida grapefruits. My sister found a recipe for the Hollywood Brown Derby cake when we got home, and I decided to try making it.
I got to separate eggs for the first time on my own when I baked this cake! When I separated the eggs I went back and forth with the egg shell halves. It was tricky and I had to be careful not to break the yolk and not ruin the egg white by mixing them together. It is my first cake from scratch too without a mix. I used a hand-mixer to make meringue too. I never knew that the skin of a grapefruit was kind of edible-ish and if you kind of grate it or shave it you can use it in a recipe. 
It was fun to make this cake but a little bit hard. Mine wasn't as good as the professional chefs at the Brown Derby, but it was my first try. Usually you don't get something on your first shot. And don't put all your eggs in one basket. This is an idiom I learned in school.  I had lots of fun making the cake but I couldn't stay up long enough to make the icing so my sister made the icing.

Hot Fudge Pudding


Before I started, I had to find all the things I needed for the cake. Once I had everything I needed,I got started on cooking. When I poured the water on the batter, it looked like I put too much water on. When my dad walked in, he said, "It looks like you made a mud pie." Then my mom came in and said, "No, it looks like a chocolate Volcano." I kind of thought it looked like a pan of mud, but after it cooked it looked kind of better than before, but it tasted a lot better than it looked. Before I started I put on my apron and chef's hat.
